Saturday night….a glass of wine and listening to Neil Young. Can’t get better than this.
“Old Man”
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there’s so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.
Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don’t get lost.
Like a coin that won’t get tossed
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.
Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn’t mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.
I’ve been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I’m all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
I’m proud and pleased to say that I own every one of Neil’s studio albums as well as nearly all of his live albums. Old Man is just one of many favorite Neil Young songs. Powderfinger, Down By the River, After the Gold Rush, Wrecking Ball, Like a Hurricane, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere…I could go on and on. 🙂

Really? Ever single one? -bows down- I am not worthy! Seriously though, I just found this live performance to give me chills, for its beauty.

Neil has put out some great live albums both acoustic and electric. Live Rust is great, for one. If you don’t mind searching and paying a little extra I strongly suggest you get Time Fades Away. It’s a live set from 1973 that Neil put on after the death of guitarist Danny Whitten from an overdose. Neil had sent Danny home after it was clear he was in no shape to tour. The album Tonight’s the Night is an expression of the grief that Neil felt over not only Whitten’s death but also roadie Bruce Berry’s, both from overdoses. I’m not just quoting Wikipedia; I’ve known this stuff before the internet even existed.

Oh and in case you didn’t know it Neil wrote Old Man as a dedication to the old caretaker that came with the ranch he bought in 1970. But you probably already knew that. I just have a lot of useless trivia that spills out sometimes.

I didn’t know that. What a wonderful gesture though. The song is eternal, I feel.

I just read that it was played at Heath Ledger’s memorial service during a slideshow of pictures from Ledger’s life. In fact it’s been covered a whole damn bunch.

You know, that would suit Heath I think.
