80’s Juke box – (1985) We Close our Eyes : Go West.

A new music trivia post series.  I am going to be posting up songs from the 80’s that may not have made it to number one, but certainly will take you back to the time of big hair, bigger shoulder pads, and of course the best music.

“We Close Our Eyes” is a song by British pop band Go West, composed by both members Peter Cox and Richard Drummie. Recognizable by its synthesizer hook, it was the first single from their début album Go West.

The single was promoted by a music video directed by Godley & Creme. This video included the band members performing the song in front of dancing wooden dolls.

In April 1985, the single was discussed by Molly Meldrum and Queen singer Freddie Mercury on the Australian music show Countdown. Mercury was impressed and predicted the band would be “very, very big”.

“We Close Our Eyes” spent fourteen weeks on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 5 in April 1985. In the United States, the single reached 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

Inside everyone hides one desire
Out side no one would know
Danger close to the edge of the knife
Safer not to let go

And while
We miss chances
You can almost hear
Time slipping away

We close our eyes, we never lose a game
Imagination never lets us take the blame
We close our eyes to see the final frame
We close our eyes to time slipping away

No show, Wednesday girl waits with the wine
She knows just what to say
While no one listen
You can almost hear time slipping away

We close our eyes we never lose a game
Imagination never lets us take the blame
We close our eyes to see the final frame
We close our eyes and we can talk to strangers

We are burning with the spark
And we can walk on water
We are tigers in the dark
We are burning, we close our eyes

Heroes never give in to the night
He knows how far he can run
And as he surrenders
You can almost hear time slipping away

We close our eyes, we never lose a game
Imagination never lets us take the blame
We close our eyes to see the final frame
We close our eyes

We close our eyes, we never lose a game
Imagination never lets us take the blame
We close our eyes to see the final frame
We close our eyes

We walk on water
We are burning
Talk to strangers

One Hit Wonders – Bow Wow Wow : I want Candy.

Originally this song was performed by the Strangeloves in 1965, only to be covered by Bow Wow Wow in May of 1982.  Produced by Kenny Laguna, it went to number nine in the UK and was a popular dance track in Australia.

Lead singer, Annabella Lwin was only 14 when she was discovered by Malcolm McLaren, working in a dry cleaning shop in 1980,  making her just 16 when she did the clip.

I know a guy who’s tough but sweet
He’s so fine, he can’t be beat
He’s got everything that I desire
Sets the summer sun on fire

I want candy, I want candy

Go to see him when the sun goes down
Ain’t no finer boy in town
You’re my guy, just what the doctor ordered
So sweet, you make my mouth water

I want candy, I want candy

Candy on the beach, there’s nothing better
But I like candy when it’s wrapped in a sweater
Some day soon I’ll make you mine,
Then I’ll have candy all the time

I want candy, I want candy
I want candy, I want candy

The Clash – Rock the Casbah

Released in 1982, this song was the Clash’s highest ranked song in the charts, from the Album – Combat Rock.  The theme however, while it is 33 years old, still stands true in the Middle East.    The clip was filmed in Austin,  Texas and while this might seem to be politically incorrect by today’s standards, it illustrated a powerful message.

The United States Airforce became an unwitting participant in the video. Two RF – 4C aircraft landing at Bergstrom Air force base (near Austin) from the east are featured in the portion of the video with the lyrics “the King called out his jetfighters…”

“Rock The Casbah”

Now the king told the boogie men
You have to let that raga drop
The oil down the desert way
Has been shakin’ to the top
The sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a’ cruisnin’ down the ville
The muezzin was a’ standing
On the radiator grille

[Chorus]
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric camel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail

[Chorus]

Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack ’em in
The in crowd say it’s cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
The temple band took five
The crowd caught a wiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive

[Chorus]

The king called up his jet fighters
He said you better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way

As soon as the shareef was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The cockpit radio blare

As soon as the shareef was
Outta their hair
The jet pilots wailed

[Chorus]

He thinks it’s not kosher
Fundamentally he can’t take it.
You know he really hates it.

One Hit Wonder – Underneath the Radar : Underworld.

Underneath the Radar is the debut album by Underworld, released in 1988. The album was a success in both Australia and the US (where it reached #139 on the Billboard 200).

The single “Underneath the Radar” reached the number five position in the charts in Australia.  The song was also featured in the fifth season of the hit TV show “Miami Vice”

The album was recorded in one continuous single take, and when preformed live, the band would play in sequence to the album.

“Underneath The Radar”

Unknown, unseen
We live underneath the radar
No sign on screen
We dance underneath the radar

Between the walls, well hey
We’re just too small to make a fuss about it
Did something fall? Well, hey
What is the point in losin’ sleep about it?

See ya later, see ya later
Hip-a-no-no-no-no
Hip-a-no-no-no-no
See ya later, call me

We dance underneath the radar
We live underneath the bomb
When you live underneath the radar
There’s no way that you’re ever gonna get far

We kiss underneath the search lights
And we live underneath the bomb
When you live underneath the radar
There’s no way that you’re ever gonna get far
(So get hip)

We speak, unheard
Like ants we dance between the towers
We sleep, they move
Come sailin’ over the horizon

Between the walls, well hey
We’re just too small to make a fuss about it
Did something fall? Well, hey
What is the point in losin’ sleep about it?

See ya later, see ya later
Hip-a-no-no-no-no
Hip-a-no-no-no-no
See ya later, call me

We dance underneath the radar
We live underneath the bomb
When you live underneath the radar
There’s no way that you’re ever gonna get far

We kiss underneath the search lights
And we live underneath the bomb
When you live underneath the radar
There’s no way that you’re ever gonna get far
(So get hip)

He says I am the doctor in a B-52
I come across the horizon
Drop my love on you
I’m gonna woo ya all, watch out
I’m gonna woo ya all, see ya later

See ya later, see ya later
Hip-a-no-no-no-no
Hip-a-no-no-no-no
See ya later, call me

Between the walls, well hey
We’re just too small to make a fuss about it
Did something fall? Well, hey
What is the point in losin’ sleep about it?

We dance underneath the radar
We live underneath the bomb
When you live underneath the radar
There’s no way that you’re ever gonna get far, so get hip

One Hit Wonders – Pop Muzik : M

We all have guilty pleasure in music; those songs that were the one hit wonders of the 70’s and the 80’s.  So after having compiled my top ten list, I thought it would be fun to start a new series dedicated to the pop songs that though the singer might have faded to obscurity, the song lives on.

First up, who could forget…. Pop Muzik by M.

Pop Muzik was one of the first new wave singles to top the charts. The singles popularity was bolstered by this catchy video that featured Scott as a DJ singing from behind turntables, and flanked by two female models providing the additional vocals… Or do they? One of the sight gags in the video depicted Brigit Novik dressed in blue who actually recorded the backup vocals which were mimed by the models. The song went on to have global success and had “everybody talkin’ ’bout Pop Muzik”. The original clip from1979. Boogie in a suitcase. Pop, pop, pop muzik.

Get up, get down

Radio, video, boogie with a suitcase
Your livin’ in a disco, forget about the rat race
Let’s do the milkshake, sellin’ like a hotcake
Try some, buy some fee-fi-fo-fum

Don’t be a rock singer
Eenie, meenie, mynie, moe
Tell me, where you wanna go

My Top Ten Song List – Number 1.

And finally I have come to post what is the number one song in my Top ten list.  Thank you to everyone that took the time to visit this blog series of songs.  For me it was like an emotional journey to discover for myself, what songs mean so much to me.  I found that it is those that had the most emotional impact, or helped me to remember events in my life.  Like my life’s anthems.  So it is fitting really, the song I have chosen for number one.

Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge over troubled water.

“Bridge Over Troubled Water”

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I’m on your side. When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you’re down and out,
When you’re on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
I’ll take your part.
When darkness comes
And pain is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine.
If you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.

My Top Ten Song List : Number 2.

Now down to number two on my list of songs, and this one actually is probably far left field from all the other songs, but the words to me are raw and powerful.  To anyone that has suffered depression or addiction the words to this song make me feel like you aren’t alone.  That there is hope and change, if you want it bad enough.

Eminem – Not Afraid.

I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid (Yeah)
To take a stand, It’s been a ride
Everybody, I guess I had to
Go to that place
To get to this one
Now some of you
Might still be in that place
If you’re tryin’ to get out
Just follow me,
I’ll get you there

You can try and read my lyrics off of this paper before I lay ’em
But you won’t take the sting out these words before I say ’em
‘Cause ain’t no way I’m a let you stop me from causin’ mayhem
When I say I’m a do somethin’ I do it,
I don’t give a damn what you think,
I’m doin’ this for me, so fuck the world, feed it beans,
It’s gassed up, if it thinks it’s stoppin’ me
I’m a be what I set out to be, without a doubt undoubtedly
And all those who look down on me I’m tearin’ down your balcony
No if ands or buts, don’t try to ask him why or how can he
From “Infinite” down to the last “Relapse” album he’s still shittin’,
Whether he’s on salary paid hourly until he bows out or he shits his bowels out of him
Whichever comes first, for better or worse
He’s married to the game, like a fuck you for Christmas
His gift is a curse, forget the Earth, he’s got the urge to pull his dick from the dirt,
And fuck the whole universe

I’m not afraid (I’m not afraid)
To take a stand (To take a stand)
Everybody (Everybody)
Come take my hand come (Come take my hand)
We’ll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just letting you know that, you’re not alone
Holla if you feel like you’ve been down the same road

Okay quit playin’ with the scissors and shit, and cut the crap
I shouldn’t have to rhyme these words in the rhythm for you to know it’s a rap
You said you was king,
You lied through your teeth, for that fuck your feelings,
Instead of gettin’ crowned you’re gettin’ capped, and to the fans,
I’ll never let you down again, I’m back
I promise to never go back on that promise,
In fact, let’s be honest, that last “Relapse” CD was eh
Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground
Relax, I ain’t goin’ back to that now
All I’m tryin’ to say is get back, click-clack, blow ’cause I ain’t playin’ around
It’s a game called circle and I don’t know how,
I’m way too up to back down
But I think I’m still tryin’ to figure this crap out
Thought I had it mapped out but I guess I didn’t, this fuckin’ black cloud
Still follows, me around but it’s time to exercise these demons
These muh’fuckers are doin’ jumpin’ jacks now

I’m not afraid (I’m not afraid)
To take a stand (To take a stand)
Everybody (Everybody)
Come take my hand come (Come take my hand)
We’ll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just letting you know that, you’re not alone
Holla if you feel like you’ve been down the same road

And I just can’t keep living this way
So starting today,
I’m breaking out of this cage
I’m standing up, I’m a face my demons
I’m manning up, I’m a hold my ground
I’ve had enough, now I’m so fed up
Time to put my life back together right now (now)

It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me
Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally
For you, so I could come back a brand new me you helped see me through
And don’t realize what you did, believe me you
I been through the ringer, but they could do little to the middle finger
I think I got a tear in my eye, I feel like the king of
My world, haters can make like bees with no stingers and drop dead,
No more bee flingers, no more drama from now on,
I promise to focus solely on handlin’ my responsibilities as a father
So I solemnly swear to always treat this roof, like my daughters and raise it,
You couldn’t lift a single shingle on it! ‘Cause the way I feel,
I’m strong enough to go to the club or the corner pub,
And lift the whole liquor counter up ’cause I’m raising the bar
I’d shoot for the moon but I’m too busy gazin’ at stars, I feel amazing and I’m not

My Top Ten Song List – Number 3.

Most of the songs in my list are considered classics, whereas number three in my list is more contemporary.  I thought long and hard about my top three, and this one has to be in it.  I am a huge fan of Swedish house mafia, and the footage in the clip brings back such memories for me.  The lyrics are about hope…and not to give up.   So…here is number three.

Swedish House Mafia – Don’t worry child : featuring John Martin.

“Don’t You Worry Child”
(feat. John Martin)

There was a time
I used to look into my father’s eyes.
In a happy home
I was a king, I had a golden throne.
Those days are gone,
Now the memory’s on the wall.
I hear the songs
From the places where I was born.

Upon a hill across a blue lake,
That’s where I had my first heartbreak.
I still remember how it all changed.

My father said,
“Don’t you worry, don’t you worry, child.
See heaven’s got a plan for you.
Don’t you worry, don’t you worry now.”
Yeah!

“Don’t you worry, don’t you worry, child.
See heaven’s got a plan for you.
Don’t you worry, don’t you worry now.”
Yeah!

There was a time
I met a girl of a different kind.
We ruled the world,
I thought I’d never lose her out of sight.
We were so young,
I think of her now and then.
I still hear the songs
Reminding me of a friend.

Upon a hill across a blue lake,
That’s where I had my first heartbreak.
I still remember how it all changed.

My father said,
“Don’t you worry, don’t you worry, child.
See heaven’s got a plan for you.
Don’t you worry, don’t you worry now.”
Yeah!

Oh, oh, oh!
Oh, oh, oh!

See heaven’s got a plan for you
[Live version repetitions:]
See heaven’s got a plan for you
See heaven’s got a plan for you

“Don’t you worry, don’t you worry, child.
See heaven’s got a plan for you.
Don’t you worry, don’t you worry now.”
Yeah!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh! [3x]
Yeah!

My Top Ten Song List – Number 4.

Who could forget the sing along scene in Almost famous, when the band sang this song and there was a sense of unity once more.  Tiny Dancer by Elton John is my pick for my top ten song, number four.  It’s just such a beautiful ballad with Elton’s talent as a piano man showing through.  I do remember though, that there was another version with Tony Danza instead of Tiny Dancer sung instead.  :3

Elton John : Tiny Dancer.

“Tiny Dancer”

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad

Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows the tune she hums

But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
