Thirsty Merc – In the Summertime

Still hot here…..in the Summertime.

“In The Summertime”

I don’t have a job
I never liked them
I just wanna play in the sunshine

They say I was wrong
But I know better
I live my life like I’m dying

Gimme a chance
I’ll do my best to kick and scream and dance
When winter comes I’ll turn around

Take me back to the sweet times
The hot nights
Everything is gonna be alright
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
And even if I have to wait til next year
I don’t care
All I know is that I’ll meet you there
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
That is where I’ll be

I can’t complain
‘Cos I’m still breathing
There’s nobody breathing down my neck now

Gimme a go
Like an open furnace setting fire to snow
When winter comes I’ll ask the crowd

To take me back to the sweet times
The hot nights
Everything is gonna be alright
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
And even if I have to wait til next year
I don’t care
All I know is that I’ll meet you there
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
That is where I’ll be

So let me run
I’ll dream until my head weighs 16 tonnes
And when I wake sometime in June
I’ll say

Take me back to the sweet times
The hot nights
Everything is gonna be alright
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
And even if I have to wait til next year
I don’t care
All I know is that I’ll meet you there
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime

Take me back to the sweet times
The hot nights
Everything is gonna be alright
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
And even if I have to wait til next year
I don’t care
All I know is that I’ll meet you there
In the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
Baby, in the summertime
That is where I’ll be

Then and Now : Genesis / Disturbed – Land of Confusion.

One of my favorites by Genesis, with a video produced using puppets from the UK sketch show Spitting Image.  It was written by guitarist Mike Rutherford for their 1986 album Invisible Touch.

I must’ve dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
They’re moving into the street.

Now did you read the news today
They say the danger’s gone away
But I can see the fire’s still alight
There burning into the night.

There’s too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Can’t you see
This is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

Ooh Superman where are you now
When everything’s gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour.

This is the time
This is the place
So we look for the future
But there’s not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

I remember long ago –
Ooh when the sun was shining
Yes and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago –

I won’t be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We’re not just making promises
That we know, we’ll never keep.

Too many men
There’s too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Can’t you see
This is a land of confusion.

Now this is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth fighting for.

This is the world we live in
And these are the names we’re given
Stand up and let’s start showing
Just where our lives are going to.

This song was also covered by Disturbed.  Though the song was originally written in the Eighties, very little has changed.  Released on the 2 October 2006 from the album Ten thousand fists.

Glam Rock – Sherbet : Howzat.

Nothing beats a live performance, where the band and the singers are doing it without the lip sync and actually playing their instruments.  This is Sherbet’s hit “Howzat” performed in 1976, the era of Glam Rock in Australia.  The song was popular to many due to the fact the song used a cricket term, to say that the lover had been found out.

The phrase “Howzat!” was used by bowlers in cricket, to ask the umpire if they had bowled a batsman out.  1977 – 1978, was the age of the World Series Cricket series in Australia, and so this song was played relentlessly over that Summer.

You told me I was the one
The only one who got your head undone
And for a while I believed the line that you spun

But I’ve been looking at you
Looking closely at the things you do
I didn’t see it the way you wanted me to

How, how, howzat?
You messed about
I caught you out, howzat?

Now that I found where you’re at
It’s goodbye
Well, howzat? It’s goodbye

You only came for a smile
Even though you’re really not my style
I didn’t think that you’d run me ’round
Like you do

How, how, howzat?
You messed about
I caught you out, howzat?

Now that I found where you’re at
It’s goodbye
Well, howzat? It’s goodbye, aha
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Well, I’ve been looking at you
(I’ll tell you what I see)
Looking closely at the things you do
(No, you can’t fool me)
I didn’t see it the way you wanted me to

How, how, howzat?
You messed about
I caught you out, howzat?
Now that I found where you’re at
It’s goodbye

Howzat? You messed about
I caught you out, howzat?

Now that I found where you’re at
It’s goodbye
Well howzat? Goodbye
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Doo wah, doo wah, doo wah, doo wah
Aah

The Clash – Rock the Casbah

Released in 1982, this song was the Clash’s highest ranked song in the charts, from the Album – Combat Rock.  The theme however, while it is 33 years old, still stands true in the Middle East.    The clip was filmed in Austin,  Texas and while this might seem to be politically incorrect by today’s standards, it illustrated a powerful message.

The United States Airforce became an unwitting participant in the video. Two RF – 4C aircraft landing at Bergstrom Air force base (near Austin) from the east are featured in the portion of the video with the lyrics “the King called out his jetfighters…”

“Rock The Casbah”

Now the king told the boogie men
You have to let that raga drop
The oil down the desert way
Has been shakin’ to the top
The sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a’ cruisnin’ down the ville
The muezzin was a’ standing
On the radiator grille

[Chorus]
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah
The shareef don’t like it
Rockin’ the Casbah
Rock the Casbah

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric camel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail

[Chorus]

Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack ’em in
The in crowd say it’s cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
The temple band took five
The crowd caught a wiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive

[Chorus]

The king called up his jet fighters
He said you better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way

As soon as the shareef was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The cockpit radio blare

As soon as the shareef was
Outta their hair
The jet pilots wailed

[Chorus]

He thinks it’s not kosher
Fundamentally he can’t take it.
You know he really hates it.

My Top Ten Song List – Number 4.

Who could forget the sing along scene in Almost famous, when the band sang this song and there was a sense of unity once more.  Tiny Dancer by Elton John is my pick for my top ten song, number four.  It’s just such a beautiful ballad with Elton’s talent as a piano man showing through.  I do remember though, that there was another version with Tony Danza instead of Tiny Dancer sung instead.  :3

Elton John : Tiny Dancer.

“Tiny Dancer”

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad

Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows the tune she hums

But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you’ll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she’s in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today

My Top Ten Song List – Number 5.

So half way through my top ten songs, this one is a bit of a classic though its not what I regard as pop.  ELO’s “Don’t bring me down”.  Appearing on the charts, it was more rock than Disco…or more like driving the nail into the Disco era coffin.  A great song with nice chord changes and a slow, hard-driving beat.  You play this one up loud!

ELO : Don’t Bring Me Down.

“Don’t Bring Me Down”

You got me runnin’ goin’ out of my mind,
You got me thinkin’ that I’m wastin’ my time.
Don’t bring me down, no no no no no,
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

You wanna stay out with your fancy friends.
I’m tellin’ you it’s got to be the end,
Don’t bring me down, no no no no no no no no,
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

Don’t bring me down, groos
Don’t bring me down, groos
Don’t bring me down, groos
Don’t bring me down.

What happened to the girl I used to know?
You let your mind out somewhere down the road,
Don’t bring me down, no no no no no,
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

You’re always talkin’ ’bout your crazy nights,
One of these days you’re gonna get it right.
Don’t bring me down, no no no no no,
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

Don’t bring me down, groos
Don’t bring me down, groos
Don’t bring me down, groos
Don’t bring me down.

You’re lookin’ good just like a snake in the grass,
One of these days you’re gonna break your glass.
Don’t bring me down, no no no no no no no no,
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

You got me shakin’ got me runnin’ away
You got me crawlin’ up to you everyday,
Don’t bring me down, no no no no no,
I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

I’ll tell you once more before I get off the floor
Don’t bring me down.

The Cure – Hello Goodbye.

Last week I posted from the Art of McCartney, with Alice Cooper’s cover of Eleanor Rigby.  Today, I found this classic cover, but it features the Cure….with Paul’s son, James on keyboards.  Love to know what you guys think.  I quite enjoy this take on it.    ~RB~

“Hello, Goodbye”

You say yes, I say no
You say stop and I say go go go, oh no
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello
